Sensitive, compassionate, and caring during life's most difficult moments.

The tradition

The way we have cared for our own, for longer than anyone can remember.

Every part of a Jewish burial was shaped to care for the person who has passed, and to comfort those who remain.

Why we treat the body with such care

In our tradition, the body is never simply left behind. It carried a life, and it is returned to the earth with the same tenderness it was given at the very beginning.

Nothing about a Jewish burial is rushed or careless. Each step has a reason, and each reason is love. What follows is gentle, quiet, and the same for everyone, and there is a deep comfort in that sameness.

The preparation

How the body is prepared

Before burial, the body is cared for in two quiet ways, the same for every person: the gentle washing, and the white linen garments.

Tahara טהרה

Before burial, the body is gently washed and prepared in a quiet, unhurried way. Those who carry out Tahara do so in reverent silence, treating the person exactly as they would wish to be treated themselves.

It is an act of pure kindness, offered to someone who can never repay it. There may be no truer form of respect.

Tachrichim תכריכים

Each person is dressed in Tachrichim, fine white linen garments, without pockets and without adornment.

There is a proper way to dress for every occasion in a life. For a burial, it is the same white linen for every person, so that all stand equal.

A person of great means and a person of none are dressed exactly alike. Whatever divided us in life falls away, and we are returned to the earth as equals.

The Jewish way

Plain wood, plain linen, the open earth.

A simple wooden casket, chosen so the body can return naturally to the ground. Nothing stands between the person and the earth that receives them.

The days that follow

The care does not end at the graveside. In the week of shiva, the family is surrounded and looked after, relieved of ordinary burdens so they are free to grieve. In the year that follows, there are gentle ways to remember and to heal. No one is left to carry the loss alone.

If this is the care you want for someone you love, we are here.

Call, and we will guide you gently and clearly.
