A gentle return to the earth lets that rest come easily. To burn the body, or to seal it away in a drawer of stone, is a harder and lonelier passage. Burial spares the soul that difficulty. It is a quiet act of mercy, offered at the moment mercy matters most.
The body came from the earth, and to the earth it returns. This is not a sad fact but a hopeful one.
What is placed gently in the earth can be renewed. The same ground that receives us has, since the very beginning, brought new life from what was laid to rest.
